TO THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS OF THE
BOROUGH OF SUTTON AND CHEAM
Mr. Mayor. Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you the Annual Report on the Health
of the Borough for the year 1961. It has been prepared in accordance with
Ministry of Health Circular No 1/62.
The estimated population showed a decrease of one thousand eight
hundred and eighty The birth rate was again higher at 14.13 per thousand
of population (14.7 adjusted), compared with 13.56 per thousand of
population (13.97 adjusted) in 1960. The death rate increased to 12.48 per
thousand of population (11.36 adjusted) from 11.27 per thousand of
population (10.8 adjusted) in 1960. The main increases were in deaths
from malignant disease, coronary thrombosis and bronchitis There was
no maternal death for the third year running.
There was a higher incidence of infectious disease, almost entirely
due to 1961 being a Measles epidemic year. There was no case of Diphtheria,
Meningococcal Infection, nor,, for the third year running, of Poliomyelitis.
There was one case of Paratyphoid Fever
There was an increase in new cases of pulmonary Tuberculosis
notified in 1961 over the very low figure for 1960, but the number is still
well below the figure for 1959. A mobile Mass Miniature Radiography Unit
visited the Borough from 7th to 24th November, 1961 and was stationed at
the Public Hall, Sutton.
Housing remains the Borough's chief problem. No new houses or flats
were provided during the year, but thirty-six were under construction as at
31st December, 1961 In addition, forty-five houses or flats were in an
advanced stage of preparation and will be started in 1962. It is also hoped
to start on a further scheme for approximately two hundred units during
1962.. A further approximately six hundred units are being planned for
future development.
During the year the relief surface water sewer in Sutton High Street
between Benhill Avenue and Burnell Road, and the relief surface water
sewer in Morden Way have been completed, and will help to overcome
flooding in one or two areas of the Borough sometimes affected. In the
latter part of the year work commenced on the construction of the Cuddington
Way soil relief sewer.
The water supply of the district was maintained at a high standard of
chemical and bacteriological purity, and the excellent co-operation of the
staff of the Sutton District Water Company continued
The work of sanitary supervision of the district and of the protection
of food was efficiently carried out during the year under the direction of
the Chief Public Health Inspector. I thank him for his helpful collaboration
and report, and also the inspectorial, clerical and outdoor staff of the
Health Department for the work they have done during the year.
