TUBERCULOSIS
On 31st December 1960, there were on the register eight hundred
and fifty four cases of Tuberculosis, of whom seven hundred and fifty one
were Pulmonary and one hundred and three non-Pulmonary.
In 1960 there were two deaths from Pulmonary Tuberculosis, the
same as in 1959. The death rate remained at 0.025 per thousand of
population. There was no death from non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis,
compared with one in 1959, when the death rate was 0.01 per thousand of
population. For England and Wales the death rate for Pulmonary
Tuberculosis was 0.07 per thousand of population and for non-Pulmonary
Tuberculosis 0.01 per thousand of population.
The number of new cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis was nineteen,
compared with forty one new cases in 1959. Residual foci of infection
still persist, particularly among the middle aged and elderly, and
intensive search will be necessary to eliminate the disease. The use of
B.C.G. vaccine in adolescent children gives a high measure of protection.
Six hundred and eighty two children received injections in 1960, and
twenty five children were found to be Mantoux positive. The response
rate in the thirteen year age group was 73.1 per cent.
Six new cases of non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis were notified in 1960,
compared with four in 1959.
The Sutton and Cheam Tuberculosis and Chest Care Committee
continued its valuable assistance to patients suffering from Tuberculosis
and other chronic chest conditions and to their families throughout the
year. Additional nourishment, clothing and bedding were provided where
necessary. Grants were made to provide occupational therapy, and
holidays were arranged for children, mothers, and convalescent patients.
Miss N.L. Tayler, Care Almoner of Sutton Chest Clinic, who
replaced Mr. F.J. Stevens, most competently advised the Committee on
all necessitous cases. The Chairman is Mrs. F. Smyth, J.P., and the
Hon. Secretary is County Alderman Mrs. Margaret Walkden, O.B.E., J.P.,
9, All Saints Road, Sutton.
