4. Clearance Arena - Section 42 of the Housing Act„ 1957:-
A representation in respect of Nos. 25 to 43 (odd) Maiden
Road, Cheam was made to the Borough Council on 18th February, 1958
and a resolution was passed declaring the area defined and coloured
pink, upon the map marked "Borough of Sutton and Cheam (Maiden Road)
Clearance Area 1958" to be a clearance area under Section 42 of
the Housing Act, 1957 and that the land comprised in the area be
purchased and the demolition of the buildings on the land be
undertaken or otherwise secured by the Borough Council.
The District Valuer was asked to negotiate for the purchase
of the land comprised in the area by agreement, but no agreement
had been reached by the year end.
RENT ACT, 1957
This Act came into operation on the 6th July 1957 and applies
primarily to privately owned property let unfurnished as separate
dwellings, but it also affects furnished lettings.
The main effect of the Act was to free from rent control
houses and flats with rateable values exceeding £40 in the Metropolitan
Police District, and the City of London, or over £30
elsewhere in England and Wales, and to allow limited increases in
the rents of houses and flats still under rent control. The Act
has the general objective of enabling rented properties to be put
in repair, of increasing the total stock of rented accommodation,
and of securing a better use of existing housing accommodation.
