1803 (Informal)Relish SavouryThe sample of Savoury Relish was of inferior quality. It had deteriorated through age, was not palatable and had developed off-flavours.Warning given regarding the necessity for the periodical examination of stocks liable to deterioration through prolonged storage. The sample was taken from stock admitted to be at least two years old. No remaining stocks on premises.
1819 (Informal)Custard PowderSample submitted on account of complaint that the powder had a 'carbolic' smell. Public Analyst reported that the objectionable smell and taste were associated with the flavourings used and not as a result of contamination with soap or other impurity.Few remaining packets withdrawn from sale.
1843 (Informal)Iron Tonic Pills (Blaud's)Labelling Infringement The pills had been prepared in the traditional manner in accordance with the British Pharmacopoeia 1948, but Blaud's Pills have been deleted from the current British Pharmacopoeia 1953 and therefore not correct to refer to them on the label as B.PLabels changed to conform with the observations made by the Public Analyst.
1849 (Informal)MarzipanSample contained 12% of ground almonds. Marzipan is basically a mixture of ground almonds and sugars. A reasonable minimum content of ground almonda is 20%.Retailer admitted that a small amount of fondant was sometimes mixed with the marzipan to make It "easier to work" and it was possible that the "mixture" had been sent in error to the branch shop from which the sample was taken. A further sample was taken and found to be satisfactory.
