Maternal Mortality. There were two deaths. One was from
obstructed labour due to contracted pelvis and one from septicaemia
following abortion the cause of which was not ascertained at the
inquest. The maternal mortality rate was 2.24 per thousand total
births, compared with 0.72 for England and Wales.

Of the sixteen deaths, twelve occurred in the neo-natal period, within one month of birth, as is shown in the following table of causes and age groups.
