TO THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS OF THE
BOROUGH OF SUTTON AND CHEAM
Mr. Mayor, Ladles and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you the Annual Report on
the health of the Borough for the year 1952.
The health of the community was good. The birth rate fell
from 11.5 per thousand of population to 10.79 per thousand of
population. The death' rate was stationary at 10.8 per thousand
of population. The infantile mortality rate was low. There
were two maternal deaths.
The general incidence of infectious diseases was lower.
Measles was epidemic during March. Six cases of Poliomyelitis
were notified. There was no case of Diphtheria.
A Mass Radiography Unit visited the Borough in August and
again proved of great value in the detection of early disease
and the prevention of illness.
The Council's housing programme progressed. During the year
103 flats and houses were completed and 63 flats and houses were
in course of erection. Schemes were in progress for 47 flats
and houses. In November preparation of the site at Banstead for
the erection of 200 houses was commenced.
The work of general sanitation, of the prevention of
nuisances and of the protection of food was carried out efficiently
under the direction of the Chief Sanitary Inspector (Mr. C. W.
Newbery) who has constantly endeavoured to promote progress in
hygiene and housing, and to whom, and to the members of the staff
I would express my appreciation of their services.
The water supply of the district maintained a high standard
of chemical and bacteriological purity. Effective control by
daily sampling and by chlorination was continued.
I thank the members of the Council for their advice and help
during the year and I am grateful to the officers of the Council
for their co-operation.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
ENEAS J. MACINTYRE
Medical Officer of Health.
