TUBERCULOSIS.
On 31st December 1944, there were on the Register
693 cases of Tuberculosis, of which 541 were Pulmonary cases and
152 non-pulmonary cases. The death rate from Pulmonary
Tuberculosis was 0.53 per 1000 of population, and for nonpulmonary
Tuberculosis 0.19. The total Tuberculosis death rate in
1944 was 0.72 compared with 0.60 per 1000 of population in 1943.
The corresponding death rates for England and Wales in 1944 were:
Pulmonary, 0.52 per 1000 of population; non-pulmonary, 0.10 per
1000 of population. Total rate: 0.60 per 1000 of population.
The number of new cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis notified
during the year rose to 86 from 70 in the previous year. The
increase is apparent in the younger age groups involving the
child, the school child, and the adolescent. Increase in child
infection is also indicated by an increase in deaths from
Tuberculous Meningitis, which is usually the dramatic and fatal
sequel to the intimate contact of the young child with an
infectious patient, The hops of reduction of incidence lies
in improvement of housing conditions, increase in sanatorium
accommodation, and in early diagnosis aided by mass radiography.
The introduction of mass radiography will lead to an
increase in the notifications of early cases, and provided that
immediate treatment can be given, will reduce the number of
chronic infectious cases in the community. A unit for mass
radiography is now in operation at St. Helier Hospital.
The Sutton and Cheam Tuberculosis Care Committee continued
to carry out very useful work. The scheme of allowances to
enable early cases to undertake treatment was continued with
good effect', and is worthy of extension.

The following table shows new cases and deaths in age groups.
