Drainage and Sewerage -During the year a short
length of sewer has been laid from Cornwall Road
to open up some building plots fronting the Sutton
By-Pass Road, which it has not been possible to
develop owing to their low position.
A relief surface water sewer varying in diameter
from 12 ins. to 15 ins. has been laid along a considerable
length of Tudor Avenue in substitution for the
existing inadequate sewer.
A considerable length of 9-in. diameter soil sewer
has also been laid from the Refuse Disposal Plant
in Boscombe Road, Worcester Park, down the public
footpath to the existing sewer in Green Lane.
Owing to the outbreak of war, little progress has
been made in the preparation of the contracts for the
construction of the High Level Relief Soil Sewer to
serve the greater portion of the Parish of Sutton and
the new sewer to be laid from Gander Green Lane
area to the Worcester Park Sewage Works.
The plans for the large scale additions, and alterations
to the Worcester Park Sewage Works have been
commenced, but little progress has been made owing
to the demands of more urgent work.
Refuse Collection and Scavenging.—The collection
of house refuse and its subsequent disposal is carried
out under the supervision of the Borough Engineer and
Surveyor.
The whole of the manual labour in the collection and
disposal of refuse is provided by the Council, and
during the year under review eight modern rear-loading
large capacity refuse collection vehicles have been
purchased by the Council and put into commission, in
substitution for those previously hired.
The house refuse is disposed of at the Refuse Disposal
Plant, Boscombe Road, Worcester Park, which
consists of an eight-cell top feed mechanically clinkered
trough grate incinerator.
All scavenging of the public highways is carried
out by the Borough Council under the direction of the
Borough Engineer and Surveyor.
