PROVISION OF SCHOOL MEALS AND MILK
Milk
Free milk was supplied during 1969/70 to all children in maintained primary and special schools.
The result of a census taken on a day in September 1969 showed that 22,218 children received one
third pint. Of children present on that day, this amounted to 98% of infants, 90% of juniors and 88% of
pupils in special schools.
Children of primary age in non-maintained schools are also supplied with free milk. About 1,050
bottles per day were provided during 1969/70.
School milk is pasteurised and the supplying dairies are supervised by the Medical Officer of
Health.
Meals
Meals are served to maintained schools in 88 different premises. The average number provided to
pupils on each school day during 1969/70 was 26,900 and during holidays, 360 per day.
Cost of School Meals and Milk
Total expenditure on school meals and milk for 1969/70 was estimated at £865,790 and income
from payments and other sources at £350,660. This gives a net expenditure of £515,310 chargeable on the
rates
