RIVER POLLUTION
Reports continued to be received every three months from the Officers of
Middlesex County Council regarding the condition of the River Brent. Samples
were taken at points along the stream from Wembley to Brentford High Street;
the two sampling points in the Borough being at Gallows Bridge and Brentford
High Street.
The results of sampling in 1956 were unsatisfactory at the beginning of
the year, but in July and October there was considerable improvement attributable
in part to the wet cool summer.
No new sources of pollution were discovered during the year, and no action
was required to be taken against persons using the River Brent for unauthorised
discharge of sewage or trade effluents.
Pollution of the River Thames from a Chiswick source was confirmed in the
summer of 1956 and steps taken to eliminate this source of contamination.
