Twenty barges and house-boats, etc., and forty-seven
caravans were inspected.
It was ascertained that in eight cases the water supply was
unsatisfactory or insufficient. In eight cases the methods of
refuse disposal and in eleven cases the methods of sewage disposal
were unsatisfactory, and there were four families considered to
be living in overcrowded conditions.
Action was taken with regard to the insanitary dwellings
and the cases of overcrowding were brought to the notice of the
Housing Department for attention.
In the case of a specific area (Workhouse Dock) conditions
were considered to be extremely bad as it appeared that the
waters of the Dock were being fouled by the tipping of refuse
and sewage from the barges situated in that water. This was
confirmed by a bacteriological examination of the dock water
which showed heavy contamination with faccal organises. The
Borough Council has this matter under review.
SMOKE POLLUTION.
The Borough of Brentford and Chiswick is comparatively
free of trouble caused by heavy atmospheric pollution from factory
chimneys but there are occasional complaints in certain areas of
pollution by grit and fumes and during 1949 the Council decided
to set up two stations for observations to be made on the quantity
and quality of atmospheric pollution, one in Brentford and one
in Chiswick. Up to the end of the year the full equipment had
not been received for the stations to be completed and observations
to be taken.
