This table shows that the incidence of tuberculosis in the
Borough began to rise during the war in the year 1942 and
increased to a peak year in 1946. It is noteworthy that the death
rate did not increase proportionately with the notification rate,
and it may be that the discovery of cases in the earlier stages and
more amenable to treatment was the reason for the increase in
the notification figure. The figure for 1949 while still 23.4%
higher than that for 1930 corresponds with a very much lower
death rate, i.e. 25, as compared with 47 or 46.8% of the 1930
figure.
The following graph illustrates the progress of tuberculosis
notification and death incidence during the past 20 years.
The occupations of all newly notified cases of tuberculosis
have been tabulated and are shown in Table XII.
