(b) Tonsils and Adenoids.—The Local Authority's
arrangement with the Chiswick Hospital for the operative
treatment of these defects was continued during the year.
The request of the Board of Education relating to this treatment
is complied with, viz.: That all children operated upon
should be detained in Hospital for at least one day after the
operation. All straightforward cases are as a rule admitted
on a Friday, operated upon on the Saturday, and discharged
the following Monday. Complicated cases are detained as
long as necessary. The Hospital charge the Education
Committee the very reasonable fee of £2 2s. for each six cases.
In Table IV, Group III, it will be found that 107
children were operated upon at this Hospital. The large
number of cases, 214, classified as receiving other forms of
treatment were of children with moderate enlargement of
these structures without marked secondary symptoms and
with carious teeth. Their teeth were attended to and they
were given nasal douches and kept under observation.
(c) Tuberculosis.—No treatment for this disease is
undertaken by the Eocal Authority. Four children found to be
suffering from Tuberculosis of Eungs, and eight suspected of
being so affected, were sent to Dr. Norton at the Eocal
Tuberculosis Dispensary. Three of the former class were
sent to a Sanatorium, and two of the latter to Institutions
for observation. Two children suffering from Grandular
Tuberculosis, and two from Tuberculosis of the Skin were
sent to Hospital for treatment. No treatment was required
for the three children classified as suffering from Tuberculosis
of "Bones and Joints," as the disease was quiescent or
arrested.
(d) Skin Diseases.—The treatment for skin diseases is
undertaken in the Minor Ailment Clinic. As is usual, the
majority of the cases were those of Contagious Impetigo, and
179 were treated in the Clinic during the year. The majority
of cases yield to treatment, but in three instances where the
disease was widespread and the home conditions very
unfavourable, the children had to be sent to the West Middlesex
Hospital, where they were treated as In-patients.
