EXTRACT FROM MEDICAL OFFICER OF
HEALTH'S REPORT Re SANITARY
CONDITION AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
Sanitation and Water Supply of the Schools.— The
water supply to the whole Schools in the district is from the
Metropolitan Water Board mains. Ample washing accommodation
is provided by properly trapped lavatory basins,
while at the new Hogarth Infants' School, a bath is also
provided. By reason of certain representations made to the
Education Committee by this Department, the Committee
requested that a thorough examination, including the testing
of the drains, should be made of all the Elementary Schools.

minor defects were discovered including defective fresh air
inlets, choked rain water gullies, etc., and also as previously
reported to the Committee, certain of the Schools were
provided with the open trough systems of W.C.'s with
automatic flushing. A full report as to the minor defects

Education Committee, and also the following recommendations:—
(1) A periodical inspection of the drainage systems (including
the opening up of drain inspection covers) and
general condition of the sanitary appliances as regards
to cleanliness, etc., should be arranged.
(2) The trough system of W.C.'s should be abolished as
soon as convenient.
(3) A rigid rule should be enforced requiring the opening
of all doors and windows for a thorough ventilation of
the classrooms every evening and week-end, when the
Schools are closed.
The Committee adopted the report and gave
instructions that the necessary work of bringing the drainage
