7. Smoke Abatement.—Chiswick not being a large
manufacturing centre, it was natural that little trouble has
been experienced during the period under review, as a result
of smoke nuisances arising from its few factories.
The Wall Paper Manufacturing Co., Iytd., during 1921,
converted their coal furnaces for oil consumption, and this,
for a time, resulted in complaints being received of black
smoke. The Company immediately took the matter up, and
installed expensive appliances and recorders whereby the
boiler attendant became immediately aware of any defect, or
