Sir,
During a large portion of 1943 the office was without
the services of Mr. Bell, Sanitary Inspector, through illness. He
recommenced duties the latter part of the year. This meant that only
the most important work was carried out, such as food examination,
water sampling, and disinfestation. Trouble was experienced through
crickets at the House Refuse Dump, -ultimately this was overcome,
Numerous complaints were received on various matters and these were
dealt vL th as far as possible. The work of disinfection after infectious
disease has received prompt attention.
Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act. 1919. A survey of the District was
prepared and forwarded to the infestation Branch of the Ministry of Pood
upon the Council agreeing to undertake this work vithin the District,
I attended the courses held in London on the subject. Arrangements have
been made with the Civil Defence to use some of their personnel if
required,
SUMMARY OF SANITARY WORK AND IMPROVERMENTS
Eradication of Bed Bugs
(1) The number of Council houses infested, 16

(2) The methods employed for freeing infested houses from bugs are
the removal of all woodwork etc,, and spraying with "Pyagra"
insecticide or fumigating with "Cimex" . In certain cases
fumigation with hydrogen cyanide gas is carried out.
The furniture etc., of new tenants is inspected before removal
to Council houses -and if necessary is treated with insecticide.
(4) The work of disinfestation is carried out by the local authority,
except when hydrogen cyanide gas is used, when a contractor is
employed,
