PORT SANITARY ADMINISTRATION, LONDON (HEATHROW) AIRPORT
The work of sanitary administration at a busy international airport covers a wide range of duties.
INSPECTION OF IMPORTED FOOD
Although the volume of food imported by air is quite small in comparison with that imported by
sea, it is necessary to maintain an inspection service to ensure (a) that all the food imported is fit for
human consumption and that it is free from prohibited adulterants or preservatives, and (b) that meat
or meat products are accompanied by an Official Certificate from the country of origin.
In order to provide this service Public Health Inspectors are on call duty so as to cover the whole
24 hours. During the year 638 inspections were made under the Public Health (Imported Food) Regulations,
1937-1948, and 239 tons, 1 cwt. 2 qrtrs. 12 lb. of food was inspected.
