Community Care 55
Hayes Park Hostel
Hayes Park Hostel, for the rehabilitation of persons who have completed treatment at a mental
hospital, but who need a further period of care and support before returning to the community, was
built by the former Middlesex County Council in 1963. Thirty persons are accommodated in single and
three-bedded rooms, and the day rooms include three sitting rooms and a dining room. Residents can
also relax in a pleasant garden with a number of mature trees. There is a self-contained flat for the
Warden and his family, as well as accommodation for an Assistant Warden.
In the latter part of the year the Warden at Hayes Park Hostel had to be replaced, and one of the
Mental Welfare Officers took over and was subsequently appointed as the new warden. This left a
vacancy for a Mental Welfare Officer, which has since been filled. Naturally, the new Warden required
additional support, both from the professional and administrative staff. Also, the change presented
problems with certain of the residents who needed careful and diplomatic handling. These difficulties
were overcome and the hostel is now functioning in a very satisfactory manner.
