Bourne Hostel
Bourne Hostel in South Ruislip is a purpose-built hostel with accommodation for 30 subnormal
adults. The hostel is comfortably furnished and attractively decorated. The majority of the accommodation
is in the form of single rooms. There are two lounges, and a grassed area is available for outdoor
exercise and games. (See plate 5 following page 64.)
At the official opening the Hillingdon North Society for Mentally Handicapped Children presented
the Hostel with a fish tank, an electronic organ and other recreational equipment.
The first residents were admitted on 8th February, 1967. New residents were admitted from time to
time, and at the end of the year there were 16. Another three residents had been admitted but subsequently
discharged before the end of the year. Short term care, i.e. to enable relatives to have a rest or a
holiday, was also offered to three patients. Considering the variety of cases admitted over the year, the
hostel has proved its usefulness.
It is not the intention to fill the 30 beds on a permanent basis but to keep a number of beds for
emergency or short term care. There are 19 potential cases known who could need admission to the
hostel should their home conditions change in any way.
