Report of the Principal School Medical Officer for the Year 1967
109
and fewer treatment sessions were undertaken during the year. The total number of treatment sessions
was, at 2,677, a considerable fall from 1966. Treatment sessions include the special 'gas' sessions held
at each clinic approximately once a month.
In addition to treatment of children attending primary and secondary schools, handicapped pupils
were seen as and when the necessity arose. The Special School at Henley was visited by a member of
the staff.
It was very difficult to deal with special cases, i.e. children with toothache and/or injury to the
teeth. Where no dentist was in attendance at the clinic these children were seen at the nearest available
clinic. In many cases unfortunately quite long journeys were involved. This position has remained
unchanged for a very long time.
Orthodontics continue to play a vital part in the Dental Service. Two part-time dental surgeons
undertake this important work. All patients proceeding to orthodontic treatment are referred by the
dental surgeons, and 553 cases came under care during the year. Of this number, 120 were completed or
transferred to other centres because of change of address.
