NURSING HOMES
Under the provisions of the Public Health Act, 1936, and the Nursing Homes Act, 1963, nursing
homes must be registered with the local authority, which supervises their conduct, standard of care
provided, staff, number of persons admitted, and so on, as laid down in the Conduct of Nursing Homes
Regulations, 1963. These provisions apply also to institutions not carried on for profit.
There were two such registered Homes in the Borough. One, which cared for 12 patients, closed
at the end of the year owing to the removal of the owner outside the Borough. The other is a hospital
with a maximum of 145 beds. Both Homes were visited during the year by a senior medical officer
and were found satisfactory.
PUBLIC MORTUARY
The Council Mortuary in Kingston Lane is purpose-built and of modern design. It provides
excellent facilities for pathologists, and there is a waiting room and viewing chapel for relatives.
The bodies received and post-mortem examinations carried out were:—

CERVICAL CYTOLOGY
Following the receipt of approval from the Ministry of Health, two Well Women's Clinics were
started in September for screening of women aged 34 years upwards. They are seen by appointment
only, and in addition to slides being made for cervical cytology investigation for carcinoma, a physical
examination of the pelvis and the breasts is carried out, the blood pressure is recorded and the urine
tested.
The demand has outstripped the available resources, as was expected, but the service will be
expanded as soon as possible.
Cytological examinations have been carried out in the pathology departments of Hillingdon and
Mount Vernon Hospitals, and I should like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of these laboratories
for their help and co-operation.
The findings at each clinic are as follows:—
