Bourne Hostel
During the year progress was made towards the completion of this hostel, and it was expected
that the first patients would be received early in 1967.
MENTAL ILLNESS
Domiciliary care of persons suffering from mental illness and support to their families was maintained
by the field staff of the Mental Health Section during 1966. This was a year of consolidation
following the trying period of mid-1965, when the available staff comprised the Chief Mental Welfare
Officer and his Deputy only.
The field staff now consists of:—
The Chief Mental Welfare Officer,
The Deputy Chief Mental Welfare Officer,
Five Mental Welfare Officers.
It was found possible to maintain a much closer degree of contact not only with the patients and
their families, but also with hospital medical staff and social workers. There were welcome signs that
psychiatric hospitals are becoming increasingly aware of the services offered by local authorities in the
field of community care. Close contact was maintained with family doctors and other interested
agencies.
