fortunately not seriously. The accident involved a vertical plan filing cabinet which is a
heavy metal container in which large sheets of plans are suspended vertically from twin
overlapping spikes. The front of the cabinet is hinged at the bottom to allow a tilt forward
so as to disengage the spikes and permit the removal of the selected sheet. In this
instance the cabinet was heavily loaded with plans and when the frontage was opened
the entire cabinet toppled forward on to the employee. The transference of weight when
the cabinet was opened had clearly moved the centre of gravity outside the base and
perhaps assisted by some measure of leaning from the employee, the cabinet tipped over.
In subsequent discussions with the manufacturer of the product, it was agreed that these
cabinets should be anchored to either wall or floor, or where more than one are in use to
each other in a back to back position. It would seem that no specific instructions to this
effect are issued with the cabinets.
