Exhibition of Association for the Handicapped
The department was happy to contribute a stand to this exhibition and assist with
publicity.
Mind Week
In addition to wide publicity for this week and its activities the department, in collaboration
with the Social Services department produced a leaflet informing readers of
the continuing help available in this sphere and the particular activities arranged for the
week. I am indebted to the Richmond & Barnes and Twickenham & District Associations
for Mental Health, Dr. Higgins of the Child Guidance Service and Mr. Richards,
Director of Social Services.
Health Education in Schools
Talks by members of the Health Department staff were given to six secondary schools.
Three of these had a Health Education series, and a further two borrowed from the
resources available.
Help was also given during the course run by the Adult College for some school
leavers from Gainsborough School.
Health Visitors gave talks on personal hygiene to girls in the top form of three
junior schools, and several talks on care of the teeth to one infant school.
Three Parent Teachers Associations were given talks by Medical Officers.
Voluntary Organisations
22 organisations were given 27 talks and three received the services of a projectionist
and projector. A wide range of subjects was covered. The annual meeting of leaders of
womens' organisations had an increased attendance.
Firms and Stores
One store has given a series of four talks to their staff during their training period.
Additional contact was made with 12 other firms and stores.
Health Education in Clinics
(1) Preparation for Childbirth Classes have continued with tuition from Health
Visitors, Midwives and outside speakers. Good use has been made of the film 'Ready for
Baby1 purchased at the beginning of the year.
(2) Mothers Clubs. A Mothers Club has been formed at York House Clinic and
one now started at Princes Road Youth Club has considerable help from the local Health
Visitors. Both should prove very helpful when fully established.
(3) Stanley Road Day Clinic. Educational films have been supplied each week.
(4) Clinics for Older People. The informal weight-watchers group continues to
receive talks on Health subjects from a Health Visitor.
