no prosecutions resulted during the year. The results indicate that
on the whole the nature and quality of foodstuffs sold are of a
satisfactory standard.
In the same Section i would draw your attention to the large
number of visits paid to food premises and the very substantial
number of improvements which resulted therefrom.
Provision of Health Services in the Area.
Section B outlines the health services provided by the Authorities
concerned. On the whole they are well organized and cover the
needs of the residents. The services are augmented by a great deal
of work undertaken by various voluntary organizations which continue
to play a most active part in the life of the Borough.
Owing to the Council's building and re-housing policy of recent
years the population of Ham and Petersham has increased with a
very marked increase in the number of children of all ages.
The hutted Clinic erected in 1947 by the Council has served a
most useful purpose but is now becoming too small to provide an
adequate service and this deficiency will become more marked as
time passes.
I am very hopeful that if the Housing Committee will set aside a
well placed and suitable site the County Council may provide a
permanent adequately sized Clinic within the next few years.

For that part of Section D which deals with the Council's Housing
Estate and future programme I am indebted to the Housing
Manager.
While reading this it is essential to bear in mind the great difficulties
under which the Housing Committee are working by reason
of the shortage of building sites.
During the year only 14 families were re-housed and it was not
possible to add any houses or flats to the estate.
The future programme is more heartening, indicating as it does,
that sites containing pre-fabricated bungalows are to be re-developed
in such a way that they will house a larger number of families under
better conditions. This form of re-development will continue during
the next few years and through it there is hope that families living
