ADULTERATED OR IRREGULAR SAMPLES.
Sample No. 12: Pork Sausage Meat.
A sample of Pork Sausage Meat, purchased on the 5th August,
1954, was found to contain 170 p.p.m. Sulphur Dioxide, and a preservative
label was not displayed at the time of sale as required by
the Public Health (Preservatives in Food) Regulations 1925-1953.
The attention of the Vendors was drawn to this contravention and
they took immediate action to comply with the Regulations, and to
ensure that no future irregularity occurred. No further action was
taken in this case.
Sample No. 48: Pork Sausages.
A sample of Pork Sausages purchased on the 13th October, 1954,
was found, on examination by the Public Analyst, to contain only
42% meat. Legal proceedings were taken under Section 3, Food and
Drugs Act 1936, against the vendor on the 16th December, 1954, and
the Magistrates set a standard, in this case, that the Pork Sausages
should have contained 65% meat. A fine of £2 with two guineas
costs was imposed.
Sample No. 49 Pork Chipolata Sausages.
A sample of Pork Chipolata Sausages purchased on the 13th
October, 1954, was found, on examination by the Public Analyst, to
contain only 50% meat and, in addition, 250 p.p.m. Sulphur Dioxide.
At the time of sale a preservative notice was not displayed as required
by the Public Health (Preservatives in Food) Regulations 1925-1953.
Legal proceedings were taken under Section 3, Food and Drugs
Act, 1936, against the Vendor on the 16th December, 1954, and the
Magistrates set a standard, in this case, that the Pork Chipolata
Sausages should have contained 65% meat. The defendant was also
found guilty of an offence under the Public Health (Preservatives in
Food) Regulations 1925-1953, and fines totalling £6 with two guineas
costs were imposed.
