In the second treatment 333 manholes were dealt with and reexamination
showed that there had been good takes in the 114
manholes found to be infested.
The results obtained from both these treatments are considered
to be very satisfactory particularly in view of the fact that the
County Council had been unable to carry out the treatment in the
Autumn of 1949.
SMOKE ABATEMENT.
Richmond being a residential district contains no very large
works or factories. The smaller factories give little trouble by smoke
nuisance.
Seven complaints of a minor character were received during
the year and all were overcome by inspection of the boiler plant,
advice to stokers and interviews with managers.
Twenty-one observations for excess smoke were made on
various chimneys from business premises throughout the area, but
no contraventions were recorded.
