Number of Children given boosting doses during
1946:—
(a) Under 5 years 70
(b) Between 5 and 15 years 300
At the 31st December the percentages of children who
had been immunised were as follows:—
0—5 years 69.9%
5—15 years 86.2%
If it is remembered that each year some seven hundred
infants are added to the population, and that therefore there
is always a number of infants who are not yet old enough
for immunisation, it will be seen that the figures are very
satisfactory.
Recently the importance of small re-inforcing or boosting
doses has been emphasised, and an endeavour is being made
to give each child three such doses at appropriate intervals
during school life.
The materials used are, for children under 10 years,
Alum Precipted Toxoid (Burroughs Welcome & Co.) and for
children over 10, Toxoid Anti-Toxin Floccules. The number
of reactions resulting from the use of these materials has
been very small.
Not a single case of Diphtheria was notified during the
year and it seems certain that the credit for this must go to
the successful Diphtheria immunization campaign which has
been continuously conducted since 1934.
