Immunisation of School Children against Diphtheria.

Mentally Defective Children.
The Special School for mental defectives with accommodation
for 30 children was carried on until the summer holidays of 1939.
After the holidays, owing to the illness of the Teacher and the
utilisation of the Clinic buildings for Air Raid Precautions, it was
decided not to open this Special School at present.
Miscellaneous.
Employment of Children. Bye-laws under the Employment
of Children Act, 1903, have been adopted by the Education Committee,
and children attending school who wish to obtain employment
(part-time) must be examined as to their fitness by the School Medical
Officer.
Before the examination the Head Teachers concerned are asked
to give their views as to the prejudicial effect of the proposed employment
on the children's education.
During the year 77 boys have been examined in connection
with medical certification as to their fitness for employment.
73 certificates were granted.
Of the 73 children granted certificates, 35 were employed in
the delivery of newspapers and 38 as errand boys.
