Diphtheria.
Daring the year 55 cases of Diphtheria were notified as
compared with 64 in 1933. The rate per 1,000 living was 1.42
as compared with a case rate of 1.70 in England and Wales.
There were unfortunately four deaths from the disease during
the year. It cannot be too well known that patients with this
disease, if treated properly within the first twenty-four hours will
almost certainly recover. Every hour of delay beyond this means
increased danger to the life of the patient.
Antitoxin for the treatment of the disease is kept by various
chemists in the Borough and is immediately available for any
medical practitioner. The cost of serum so supplied during the
year was £6 19s. 6d.
