2.
Population; The estimated population for the year was 46,320.
Vital Statistics; In the statistics which follow, the figures in
brackets refer to 1963.
The birth-rate was 13.0 (13.3) per 1,000, representing 604 (615)
births. The number cf deaths was 422 (444), the death-rate being
9.1 (9.6) per 1,000.
To enable comparisons in the birth and death rates to be made
with other areas and with England and Wales as a whole, it is
necessary to make use of comparability factors. These factors
are supplied by the General Register Office and they allow for
differing sex and age distribution of local populations. The
factors for Chingford are: Births 1.10 and Deaths 1.14. The
table on page 4 indicates the crude rates and the rates adjusted
by the comparability factors.
The infant mortality rate was 19.8 (8.1). The rate for
England and Wales was 20.0.
The table on page 4 shows at a glance the birth, death and
infant mortality rates for the years 1959-64.
Causes of Death; Three deaths out of every four were attributable
to diseases of the heart and circulation, and cancer. The table
on page 13 indicates the rise in recent years in the deaths from
diseases of the heart and circulation.
Infectious Diseases: There was very little infectious illness.
Care of the Aged: Year by year the amount of time devoted by the
staff of the Health Department to the care of the aged and infirm
has been increasing appreciably.
Dr. F.G. Brown, Area Medical Officer, Essex County Council,
has kindly supplied the statistical matter on pages 5 and 6.
I express my thanks to the Chairman and Members of the Health
Committee at Chingford for their support and to the staff of the
Department especially to the long-service members, in particular
to Miss V. Pettit, my secretary, whose loyalty, patience and
assistance has been deeply appreciated throughout all my years of
service.
