2.
Dysentery emphasises once more the urgent need for attention to personal
hygiene if this and other bowel infections are to be reduced.
Chiropody Service: The chiropody service sponsored by the Chingford
Old People's Welfare Committee ceased in December 19&3 and was taken
over by the Essex County Council. The service given by the latter
appears to lack the personal care and attention given by the
chiropodists under the Old People's Welfare Scheme. Numerous
complaints have been received about the inadequacy of the County
Council's service.
Home Safety Exhibition: A Home Safety Exhibition was held in the
Chingford Assembly Hall in July. The exhibition was very well
presented and displayed. No aspect of home safety was omitted.
It was colourful and indicated in a simple, clear and direct manner
the dangers and hazards to be avoided to make every home safe.
Moreover, as attendances at exhibitions these days go, it was a
success numerically with an attendance of 1,300 persons.
Fluoridation of Water Supplies: In April 1963, the Council approved
arrangements which water undertakings were proposing to raise the
fluoride content of water to 1.0 part per million.
Dr. F.G. Brown, Area Medical Officer, Essex County Council, has
kindly supplied the statistical matter on pages 5 and 6.
The reader of this report will be convinced of the vast amount
of work that is done in the Health Department, day in and day out,
to protect the citizens of Chingford against all those environmental
factors which may adversely affect, whether directly or indirectly,
their health and well-being.
I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to the
Chairman and Members of the Health Committee for their support
and to the staff of the Department for their co-operation during
the year.
