Factories Act. 1961
During 1963 there were 83 factories, all using power, on the
district register. It was not found necessary to take any statutory
action under this Act; such defects as were discovered were remedied
informally by the managements.
No contraventions of employment were observed and the statutory
lists of workers were received.
Petroleum Acts. 1928 and 1936
Two petroleum stations were re-built following discovery of
defective underground petroleum storage tanks and pipe lines and a
third station is in the process of being re-developed following
failure of the tanks on routine testing.
Generally speaking, the standard of compliance with the Acts in
Chingford is good but there is still much carelessness on the part of
both motorists and petrol attendants alike, particularly with regard
to smoking.
As new stations are built the distance of the petrol pumps from
the public footpaths has been increased to comply with the Regulations.
There are still examples in Chingford of petrol being dispensed in the
roadway and over the pavement from swinging arms. This is an
obsolete and dangerous practice and is being discouraged.
