The Public Analysts commented adversely on nine samples and
four of these related to the composition and labelling of some of
the modern types of soup powder. Comment on this matter was

deferred pending the issue of an official standard.
One adverse sample referred to a can of National Dried
Milk which was found to be contaminated with burnt or charred milk
powder. The matter was referred to the appropriate Ministry,
One sample of bread was found to contain finely divided
burnt dough. This complaint was referred to the manufacturers..
One sample of ice cream mixture was found to contain . Skimened
milk powder although the label described one of the constituents
as Dried Milk Solids, It was the Analysts opinion that the term
"Dried Milk Solid" meant milk solids containing their full complement
of butter fat. The manufacturer's attention was drawn to
discrepancy.
As a result of a complaint a loaf of bread was submitted
for analysis and was found to contain a fish hook. There was
evidence to show that the condition of the hook was consistent with
its having been baked in the loaf and proceedings were instituted
against the retailer.
One sample of canned strained creamed spinach was forwarded
for analysis and it was found to contain a cigarette end. The
chemical examination of the spinach indicated that the nicotine
content was 0.028%. Proceedings were instituted.
