the borough.
New Legislation: Prom the text of the Report it will be seen
that the Housing Repairs and Rents Act, 1954, came into operation
during the year and work was commenced on the preparation of the
proposals for dealing with unfit houses which were required to
be submitted to the Minister by August, 1955. The receipt of
applications for Certificates of Disrepair was smaller than
anticipated.
The Pood and Drugs Amendment Act, 1954, received
Royal Assent on the 25th November of that year but has not yet
come into operation apart from Section 28 which deals with private
slaughterhouses.
As from the 2nd July, 1954, meat was decontrolled,
but the local authority found no reason to make any recommendation
as to the provision of slaughtering accommodation.
I am indebted to the Area Medical Officcr, Dr. P.G. Brown,
for the statistical matter on pages 6 and 7.
I record my thanks to the Chairman and Members of the Health
Committee for their support and to Mr. J.F. Rogers, Chief Sanitary
Inspector, and the staff of the Health Department for their help
throughout the year.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
J. H. CROSBY,
Medical Officer of Health.
August, 1955.
