PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS AND OTHER DISEASES
Diphtheria
No case of diphtheria occurred in the borough during 1953.
Facilities for immunisation against this disease are detailed on
page 7. In addition, arrangements are made for school children to
be immunised at school.
The numbers of children immunised during the year were:-
Primary immunisations - under 5 years - 362
" " - 5 to 15 years - 102
Total - 464
Number of children receiving secondary
or reinforcing injections - 515
Scarlet Fever
There was a slight reduction in the number of confirmed cases
during the year, there being 168 compared to 181 in 1952.

Measles
380 cases were notified to the Health Department; this was
a very marked reduction from the previous year. Only 2 of the
cases needed admission to hospital. There were no deaths.
Measles serum was available to general practitioners on
application to the Public Health Laboratory at Colindale for the
treatment of cases and the protection of contacts.
Whooping Cough
There was a considerable rise in the incidence of whooping
cough, viz: 181 cases notified as against 66 for the previous
year. No case needed admission to hospital and there were no
deaths.
