Food and Drugs Act, 1938.
Food and Drugs Authority.
The Council is the Food and Drugs Authority for the district
and during the year samples approximating in number to two per
thousand of the population were taken and submitted to the joint
Public Analysts.
Public Analyst.
Mr.George Taylor, F.R.I.C., 20, Eastcheap, London, E.C.3. and
Dr.J.H.Hamence, F.R.I.C., 20, Eastcheap, London, E.C.3. continued as
joint Public Analysts for the area.
Samples Submitted for Analysis.
One hundred and fourteen samples of foods and drugs were submitted
for analysis, twenty formal and ninety-four informal and it
will be seen by the following table that a reasonably wide field was
covered.
The table shows that in five instances samples were adversely
reported upon; three of the five samples being cream lollies which
contained insufficient quantity of fat to justify the description
"cream" lolly. The Analyst adopted an unofficial standard of 2½%
fat; the samples in question did not contain more than 0.1% fat in
two instances and 2.l% fat in the third sample. The labelling of these
lollies was taken up with the manufacturers who subsequently altered
the wording so as to exclude any reference to "cream". The remaining
two samples adversely reported upon were marshmallows, the
subject of complaints concerning palatability. These were found to
be rancid due to long storage and remaining stocks were withdrawn
from sale.
