It is interesting to note that the discovery of this typhoid
carrier, following on the investigations carried out at Chingford,
was instrumental in bringing to light several other cases in areas of
Essex and Middlesex, whose source of infection had remained a
mystery. The cafe employee concerned was suspended under the
Public Health (Infectious Diseases) Regulations, 1927.
I was informed by the Medical Officer of the Isolation Hospital
to which the Chingford patient was transferred, that the infecting
typhoid organism was of a particularly virulent character. I am
glad to be able to report that the patient made a complete recovery
after a very prolonged illness and that no further cases occurred
in the Borough.
Smallpox Contacts.
During the year, several persons were kept under surveillance
for sixteen days as contacts of cases or suspected cases of smallpox
imported into the country from abroad.
Scabies.
No persons were in need of treatment during the year at the
Scabies Treatment Centre.
National Assistance Act, 1948.
(a) Section 47: It was not necessary during 1950 to take
action under this section of the Act, which empowers local
authorities to remove to hospital persons in need of care and
attention.
(b) Section 50: The Chingford Council took action under
this section in one instance during the year. Part of the cost
of burial of the child concerned was recovered by the Council.
Vaccination.
Number of births registered in the district during 1950 378
Number of primary vaccinations 279
Number of re-vaccinations 78
Percentage of vaccinations to registered births 74
Medical Examinations.
During the year 18 examinations were carried out by the
Medical Officer of Health in respect of the Superannuation and
Sick Pay Scheme of the Chingford Corporation. In addition,
33 medical examinations were carried out in respect of Essex
County Council staff.
