All the adults and children concerned in the three outbreaksmade
a rapid recovery, all being free from symptoms within
twenty-four hours of onset.
Clean Food Campaign.
In October, 1949, a public meeting was held at the Larkswood
Social Centre to discuss and formulate plans for a Clean Food
Campaign in the borough.
Smallpox Contacts.
In April, 1949, several persons were kept under surveillance
for sixteen days as contacts of the smallpox cases which occurred
on the steamer "Mooltan." Fortunately, no smallpox occurred
in these contacts.
Scabies.
No persons were in need of treatment during the year at the
Scabies Treatment Centre.
National Assistance Act, 1948.
It was not necessary during 1949 to take action under Section
47 of the National Assistance Act, 1948, which empowers local
authorities to remove to hospital persons in need of care and
attention.
Vaccination.
Number of births registered in the district during 1949 513
Number of primary vaccinations 167
Percentage of vaccinations to registered births 32.5
Medical Examinations.
During the year 75 examinations were carried out by the
Medical Officer of Health in respect of the Superannuation and
Sick Pay Scheme of the Chingford Corporation. In addition, 29
medical examinations were carried out in respect of Essex County
Council staff.
