Diphtheria Immunisation
Details of the work done during 1938 are given in the following
table. It will be seen that efforts have been directed mainly
towards getting children of pre-school age protected; moreover, the
great majority of school children treated were between five and six
years of age.
The prophylactic used for those under eight years was alum
toxoid, given in doses of 0.2 and 0.5 cc. at one month's interval, and
in older children three doses of T.A.F. at a fortnightly interval.
Experience shows that two well spaced doses of alum toxoid raise
the anti-toxin in the blood to a high level in most cases and this
method is probably one of the most reliable at present at our
disposal.
Reactions were few but when they occurred alum toxoid was
discontinued and the course completed with two injections of T.A.F.
intramuscularly.
