Most of the 3 09 factories in the Borough are engaged in light
industries, the number of persons employed ranging from nearly 700 in
the largest to one or two in the smallest.
Under Section 110' of the Factories Act, 1937, the occupier of
every factory has to submit to the local authority twice a year
lists of outworkers directly employed by him in the business, outside
the factory.
HOUSING
Progress has been made on the three-year slum clearance
programme commencing in January 1961.
Five houses were deleted from the list to be dealt with under
the current programme following satisfactory execution of works of
repair and improvement.
Two Closing Orders were determined by the Corporation after
the houses were rendered fit.
A Clearance Area involving five houses was represented and the
appropriate Order later confirmed by the Minister. Four other individual
unfit houses were represented and Demolition Orders were served.
Houses Let in Lodgings.
During the year the Housing Act 1961 came into force, which
gave greater powers to Local Authorities to deal with unsatisfactory
conditions in houses let in lodgings; there are several hundred of
them in this Borough.
