Sampling
The Middlesex County Council is the food and drugs authority for
the Borough, J.A.O'Keefe, Esq. 0. B.E., Chief Officer, Public Control
Department, has kindly supplied the information in the table on
page 33 relating to samples taken in the Borough during the year
ended 31st December, 1961. With regard to the samples listed as
being unsatisfactory he makes the following comments:-
MILK
Glasses of hot milk purchased from a cafe were found to contain
45.6% of added water. The purchaser was served from an urn, later
admitted to contain half milk and half water. The proprietor of the
cafe was prosecuted, fined £2 and ordered to pay £3.12s.0d. towards
the costs.
CAKES
For selling as "cream cakes" cakes which contained artificial
cream, a baker was sent a letter of caution.
CHEESE
A retailer purchased from a London manufacturer "double cream
cheese" which was found to contain less milk fat than the 50% standard
which has been set by Middlesex courts. The London manufacturer was
sent a letter of caution. Similar action was taken in respect of a
sample of Ayrshire cream cheese on sale in Twickenham which did not
contain the required amount of milk fat.
