Section 3. Smoke from Furnaces
This section deals with the installation of new furnaces and
the requirement that new furnaces shall be so far as practicable
smokeless.
Subsection (1) makes it an offence to instal a furnace unless it is
capable of being operated without emitting smoke.
Subsection (2) provides that where plans and specifications are
submitted and approved the furnace shall be deemed to comply with
subsection (1), and subsection (3) provides that notice must be
given to the Corporation of a proposal to instal a furnace. This
notice is quite separate from an application submitted for
approval under subsection (2).
During the year three applications under subsection (2) were
submitted and approved and notice given in two cases of intention
to instal a furnace.
Section 11. Smoke Control Areas
The special survey on smoke control areas is referred to on
page 2. The normal work of the department on the control of the
emission of dark smoke from chimneys etc. was continued.
Readings are taken every month from the instruments set
up at Beveree, Hampton and York House, Twickenham and daily from
Elmfield House, Teddington. These readings are compared with
readings from instruments set up by neighbouring authorities.
