cases of imported apples all unmarked. In these latter three cases the retailers were each
fined £1 Os. Od. and ordered to pay £1 Is. Od. costs. There was one case where the
retailer falsely described Dutch tomatoes as "English". He was fined £1 Os. Od. on
each of two summonses and ordered to pay £1 2s. Od. costs.
The Defence (Sale of Food) Regulations, 1943.
One greengrocer was prosecuted under these Regulations for falsely describing a
display of Keiffer pears as "Williams". He was fined £1 Os. Od. Three other greengrocers
falsely described displays of Packham pears as "Williams". They were each
prosecuted and fined £1 Os. Od. and ordered to pay £1 Is. Od. costs.
The Labelling of Food Order, 1953.
This Order requires that in general pre-packed foods shall bear on the label a clear
statement of the designation of the food and, in the case of compound foods, the ingredients.
It also requires that the name and address of the packer or labeller appears. At 90 premises
625 articles of pre-packed food were examined. No proceedings were taken but in respect
of infringements found see paragraph " False or Misleading Descriptions " below.

In addition to the foregoing activities which arise specifically from inspections in your
area a considerable amount of work has been done for the benefit of all districts of Middlesex
equally in scrutinising advertisements and the labels of pre-packed foods and correcting
false or misleading descriptions or errors in statement of composition found therein.
Corrective action during the year in question included biscuits, confectionery, spirits,
sausages in brine, cereals, fruit squashes, margarine, ginger wine, imitation cream, liver
puree, iced lollies, cheese spreads, tinned fruit and vegetables.
Special Designated Milk.
No licences are issued by my Council in respect of Dealer/Pasteurisers or Dealers/
Sterilisers in your area. Six samples of special designated milk were taken from roundsmen
in your Borough during the year and submitted to examination. They proved
satisfactory.
