Sampling.

The Middlesex County Council is the food and drugs authority for the Borough. The Chief Officer, Public Control Department, has kindly supplied the following information relating to samples taken in the Borough during the year ended 31st December, 1952:—

Bread.
In one case a loaf of bread contained a cigarette stub. The baker responsible was
prosecuted and fined £5 and £1 costs. In another case a loaf contained a maggot but it
being possible that the loaf was contaminated at the purchaser's home, no action was
taken. In the third case a loaf of bread contained a piece of metal. The baker was
prosecuted and in view of his previous good record was absolutely discharged on payment
of two guineas costs.
Cakes.
In one case a Dundee cake contained pieces of slate. The manufacturers were
prosecuted and fined with five guineas costs. In the two other instances cake was
mouldy and contained small particles of cloth respectively. Official cautions were issued.
Fish.
Unsatisfactory samples were all of passing off smoked cod for smoked haddock and
resulted in two official cautions being sent to fishmongers.
Fish Paste.
A sample of pre-packed dressed crab was deficient in crab meat and an official caution
was despatched to the importers.
Victoria Plums.
Ponds Seedlings were sold in one instance for Victoria plums. An official caution was
addressed to the seller.
Vinegar.
Two sales of vinegar were deficient in acetic acid. A caution was despatched.
