The number of cases of whooping cough notified—142—showed a
decrease of 86 on the previous year. Eleven cases were admitted to hospital.
There were no deaths. The rate for England and Wales was 0.02.
(b) Non-notifiable Infectious Diseases
Diseases coming under this category include influenza, chicken-pox and
mumps. As these diseases are not notifiable it is not possible to ascertain
the exact incidence. During the year, however, the following cases were
brought to the notice of the department.

Tuberculosis
During the year 1948 there were 134 new cases of tuberculosis notified,
a decrease of nine on the previous year. Forty-five deaths were recorded
from the disease, giving a death rate of 0.42 per 1,000 of the population. Nonnotified
tuberculosis deaths—cases not notified as tuberculosis and not recorded
in the registers of the department during life—were responsible for 17.78
per cent, of the total tuberculosis deaths.
