The bulk of the milk supply of the borough continues to come from
outside the area and has been pasteurised or heat-treated before delivery.
Seventy'one visits were paid to dairies, milkshops and cowsheds.
Milk Sampling.
Sixteen informal samples of milk were taken during the year for
bacteriological examination or for the purpose of ascertaining whether
pasteurisation had been efficiently carried out. All were found to be
satisfactory.
Milk in Schools Scheme.
All milk used in the schools under this scheme is pasteurised.
Milk (Special Designations) Regulations, 1936-1946.

During the year the following licences were granted for the sale of designated milk:—

Food and Drugs Act, 1938.
All of the bakehouses, restaurant kitchens and hotel kitchens, and a large
number of food preparation premises within the borough have been inspected
and the work necessary in order that the premises shall comply with the above
legislation has either been complied or was in progress at the end of the
year.
In addition, 63 inspections of public-houses and hotel bars and cellars
were carried out under this legislation, as well as under section 89 of the
Public Health Act, 1936.
In one instance of a complaint of a loaf of bread found to contain a metal
button, the matter was reported to the Public Health Committee and a cautionary
letter sent to the firm of suppliers.
