The Registrar-General1 s estimate of population for the
mid-year 1947 was 105,930 and this has been adopted for the
calculation of tho statistics in this report.
BIRTHS
The -live births registered in the Borough in 1947
numbered 2,089 giving a birth rate of 19.72 per 1,000 of the
population (England and Wales 20,5).
The births were made up as follows:-

The nunber of births represents an increase of 134
compared with the previous year.
Illegitimate births formed 5.55% of the total live
births, an increase of .49% on the previous year.
Still Births .
There were 35 still births registered during the year,
giving a still birth rate" of 16.48 per. 1,000 total (live
and still) births,
DEATHS
The net deaths registered in the Borough during 1947
were Males 568 Females 603 Total 1,171, This represents an
increase of 51 compared with the previous year.
The death rate per 1,000 of the population was 11.05
as compared with 12.0 for England and Wales, The natural
increase of population (that is, excess of births over
deaths) was 918 as compared with 835 .for 1946.
Sex Mortality
The sex mortality rate was:- Males 5,36 per 1,000;
Femles 5.690 per 1,000.
