(c) REFUSE DESTRUCTION.
All three Destructors, despite their age and
unavoidable deterioration, have been in use during the year
and such maintenance repairs as have been possible have been
carried out from time to time by the Corporation's staff so
as to reduce tho amount of refuse which inevitably has to be
tipped. The Destructors, however, are still capable only of
dealing with about 65% of the refuse collected and tipping
at the Broom Road land and elsewhere has been, of necessity,
continued. No complaints during the year have been received
from these tipping operations and the difficulty in future
will rather lie in the procuring of sites to allow this,
tipping to continue than in "possible objections which may
be received from the public against this method of disposal.
Negotiations with the adjoining Urban District of
Sunbury for the provision of a new Destructor and Salvage
Recovery Plant in the area of the. latter Authority have
proceeded satisfactorily, and the Staines Urban District
Council.have duri.hg' the past few months agreed to participate
in this scheme. The expenditure involved will probably
approximate to a figure of not less than £120,000 according
to present day'costs, but the three Authorities have agreed
the main-principles underlying the scheme and it is hoped
that this -much desited provision will come to fruition as
soon as the Ministry of Health have indicated that the
building and provision of the plant can proceed.
