STATISTICS, SOCIAL CONDITIONS AND GENERAL
PROVISION OF HEALTH AREA
POPULATION
The Registrar General's estimate of population for
the mid-year 1946 was 102,850 and this has "been adopted for the
calculation of the statistics in this report.
BIRTHS.
The live "births registered in the Borough in 1946
numbered 1955, giving a birth rate of 19.01 per 1,000 of the
population. (England and Wales 19.1).
The "births were made up as follows

The number of births represents an increase of 414
compared with the previous year.
Illegitimate births formed 5.06% of the total live
births, a decrease of 4.24% on the previous year.
Still Births.
There were 49 still births registered during the year,
giving a still birth rate of 24.45 per 1,000 total (live and
still) births,
DEATHS.
The net deaths registered in the Borough during 1946
were Males 553, Females, 567, Total 1,120. This represents an
increase of 3 compared with the previous year.
The death rate per 1,000 of the population was 10.89
as compared with 11.5 for England and Wales. (Twickenham 1945
12.15). The natural increase of population (that is, excess of
births over deaths) was 835 as compared with 424 for 1945.
Sox Mortality.
The sex mortality rate was as follows:- Males 5.38
per 1,000 Females 5.51 per 1,000.
